China is one of the countries that have developed civilizations in a rather early time. Long history and vast territory have endowed China with abundant cultural and natural heritages of world class. The unique traditional culture, colorful ethnic customs and beautiful landscapes have caught the eye of the whole world.
Located in the East of Asia, on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean, China has a territory of 9.6 million square kilometers and a population of 1.3 billion. It is the biggest country in the world in terms of population.
From about 7,000 years ago, the forefathers of peoples in China began to enter the Neolithic Age. Since then, they have lived and become prosperous on this land. After thousands of years of migration and acculturation, they have evolved into an integral Chinese Nation. Together, they created the splendid Chinese Culture and made substantial contributions to the human civilization with their outstanding wisdom and originality.
China is a unitary, multiethnic country. Since 1950s, through extensive and meticulous ethnic identification, and with the endorsement of the Central People’s Government, 56 ethnic groups are officially recognized. The 55 ethnic groups are called minorities, for their populations are smaller in comparison with that of the Han people.
The feature of ethnic distribution in China is macro-tangling, micro-compacting and interlocking of ethnic communities with each other. This is the result of thousands of years interaction. Yunnan is a province with the most numerous ethnic groups, 26 of which are native groups.
Equality, solidarity, interdependence and harmony are the essential features of the ethnic relations in China. The Han can not depart from the ethnic minorities. The Minorities can not depart from the Han. The Minority groups can not depart from each other, either. Currently, all the ethnic groups of Chinese Nation respect each other, learn from each other, cooperate with each other and help each other. They are determined to launch a common strive for the common development and prosperity, and to build the social harmony together.
